Planning a Memorial Service, Step by Step

There is no single right way to say goodbye. This step-by-step guide helps you plan a service that fits your loved one — traditional or not — without losing yourself in the details.
A memorial service is for the living: a place to grieve together and to remember well. There is no single correct form. Let these steps guide you, and let your loved one’s spirit set the tone.
1. Decide the shape
Will it be a traditional funeral, a graveside gathering, a celebration of life weeks later, or something entirely your own? Consider what your loved one would have wanted and what your family can manage right now.
2. Choose when and where
A place of worship, a funeral home, a garden, a family living room — the venue matters less than the people in it. If loved ones are far away, plan for a way for them to join, and share the details somewhere everyone can find them.
3. Shape the order of the day
- A welcome, and who will give it.
- Readings, music, or prayers that meant something to them.
- The eulogy, and space for others to share a memory.
- A closing — a song, a moment of silence, an invitation to gather afterward.
4. Invite the circle
Decide who to tell and how. A memorial page can hold the time, place, and directions, collect messages from those who cannot attend, and become a lasting home for photographs and tributes.
5. Accept help
Let people bring food, print programs, greet guests, or drive. Grief and hosting do not mix well; sharing the load lets you be present. Delegate freely — people want to help and often do not know how until you ask.
Whatever you choose, a service done with love is done right.
